What are the most important documents?

Social Security Card. Once you arrive to US you must apply for Social Security Number at the nearest Social Security Administration office. Social Security Number is issued to you just once and it is a very important document in the US. If that number was not issued to you, you might not even get a job and will not be able to get your tax refund. Contact Social Security Administration or your J-1 visa sponsor while in the US if you have not receive Social Security Card.
US Visa.
Last pay slip. Your employer will pay your salary by issuing the check. Each check will have a pay slip attached to it. On the pay slip you can see what salary was paid to you, and what tax deductions were made. Keep all your pay slips secured, especially the last one, which is used for your tax refund.
W-2 form. This is the final document from your employer, where you will find all the information about your income and tax deducted while working at the company. This document will be mailed to you after the end of financial year - the 31st of December. Work and Travle participants should receive W-2 forms by the February 15th. You should receive separate W-2 form from ech employer.
DS-2019 form (J-1 visa participants)
Details about your employer. Company's name, address, payroll department telephone number.

What taxes do you need to pay in the US?

Participants of Work and Travel program (J-1 visa) are supposed to pay all type of taxes except Social Security and Medicare.
If your employer deducts Social Security and Medicare Tax from your salary, please direct him to IRS publication 519, Chapter 8, page 45.

Participants of all other programs (H-2A, H-2B, Q visas) are due to pay all of the mentioned taxes.

What taxes are in the US?

There are several different taxes withheld in the US:
  • Federal Income Tax. This tax varies from 10-12%
  • State Income Tax. There are 8 states, which don't have this tax. The others have 3-6 % tax.
  • Local Tax. Most localities don't have any taxes but few of them do have a small tax.
  • Social Security and Medicare Tax (FICA, OASDI)

How to fill W-4 form properly?

Once arrived to US you must apply for Social Security Card at Social Security Administration office. Your employer or program sponsor will help you to do it.

Before starting your employment your employer will ask you to fill W-4 form. Below you will find the sample of properly filled W-4 form:


Important: You have to claim your home address in your own country on W-4 form. Your employer will send you W-2 form to that address. W-2 form is a very important document in the tax refund process.

Tax Refunds - UK

If in past six years you worked in UK and paid income tax there, you can apply for the refund!

Required Documents
In order to apply for the UK income tax refund you will need the following documents:
- P-45/P-60 forms OR last pay slips from each employer;
- Passport copy
If you are missing any of the documents you can still apply for the income tax refund. RT Tax will retrieve the missing documents for you.
Note: If you do not hold P-45/P-60 form, in some cases RT Tax can use last employer’s pay slip, but if the pay slip is rejected by the tax authorities, RT Tax will have to contact your employer and request a copy of P-45 or P-60.

What is P-45 and P-60 Form?
P-45 and P-60 are the statements from your employer about your income and taxes withheld. P-60 should be provided to you at the end of the fiscal year, which is 5th of April. P-45 form you should get from your each employer at the time of leaving the employment.

What is Last Pay Slip?
This is the income and tax statement, which you receive form your employer with the salary check. Your Last Pay Slip contains your total income and withheld tax amounts.

Refund period
Your income taxes are refunded in 90-120 days. The refund may take longer if forms P-45/P-60 have not been provided.

How money is refunded?
There are two ways to get the refund:
- By the bank transfer to the personal bank account;
- By the personal check.

Service fee
Our service fee is 11 % from the refundable amount or minimum charge - 35 GBP.

Tax Refunds - USA

If in past three years you worked in USA and paid income tax there, you can apply for the refund!

Required Documents
In order to apply for the USA income tax refund you will need the following documents:
- W-2 forms OR last pay slips from each employer
- Copy of visa
- Copy of Social Security card
If you are missing any of the documents you can still apply for the income tax refund. RT Tax will retrieve the missing documents for you.
If you do not provide W2 form OR last pay-slip RT Tax will contact your employer to get a copy of W2 form. The fee for this service is 15USD.

What is W2 Form?
This is the statement from your employer about your income and taxes withheld. You supposed to receive it from your employer before February 15th. If you do not have W-2 form final pay slip can be used instead.

What is Last Pay Slip?
If you don’t have W2 form the Last Pay Slip will be used to refund your taxes. This is the income and tax statement, which you receive form your employer with the salary check. Your Last Pay Slip contains your total income and withheld tax amounts.

Refund Methods
RT Tax offers two refund methods:
- Traditional refund;
- Fast refund.

Traditional refund
Refund period: 90-120 days.

Fast refund
To use this service you need W-2 forms from each employer is necessary. Last pay slips are not accepted. Refund period: 30-45 days.

How money is refunded?
There are two ways to get the refund:
- By the bank transfer to the personal bank account;
- By the personal check

Service fee
Our service fee is 9 % from the refundable amount or minimum charge - 50 USD. There is additional 33USD charge if you use Fast Refund service.

Social Security Tax and Medicare Tax refund
Only Work & Travel (J-1 visa) participants may apply for Social Security and Medicare Tax refund.
Refund period: 6-8 month
Required documents for SSMT to be refunded:
- W-2 forms from each employer;
- Copy of visa;
- Copy of Social Security card;
- Copy of DS-2019 form.
Note: Last pay slips are not accepted. W-2 forms must be provided.

Service fee: Social Security and Medicare (SSMT) tax refund fee is 10 % from the refundable amount or minimum charge - 50 USD.
